1001 Songs Challenge #973: Summertime Clothes (2009)

On 11 February 2019 I set myself the challenge of reading 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die by Robert Dimery (ed.) and following the book’s advice to the letter. I’ve previously read 1001 Films… and started 1001 Albums… but felt 1001 Songs… would be a sensible place to start for what I have in mind here.

My challenge is to read about one song per day and listen to it (YouTube and Spotify, I need you tonight!) before sharing my own thoughts. Some songs I will love, others I’ll hate, and I’m sure there will be those that leave me perplexed but listen to them I shall.

I’ll also try, and most likely fail, to pinpoint the best song from the 1001 on offer but I’m nothing if not foolhardy. Instead of one song, I’m predicting I’ll have about 100 favourites by the end and may have to resort to a Top 10 so far to maintain any semblance of sanity.

So long as I post every day (including Christmas) then this challenge should come to an end on Wednesday 8 November 2021. Staying with the Barney Stinson theme I am hoping that the whole experience will prove to be… legendary!

Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes (2009)

Summertime Clothes – Wikipedia

” Summertime Clothes” is a song by experimental pop band Animal Collective. It was released on June 29, 2009 in the UK and on July 7, 2009 in the US as the second single from the band’s 2009 album Merriweather Post Pavilion , by Domino Records. The song was originally known as “Bearhug.”

Lyrics (via Genius)

Welcome to 2009! We’re leaving the UK today, dear reader, and making our way back to the US and to Baltimore in Maryland. Formed in 2003 Animal Collective are a pop band that specialise in experimentation blending the likes of pop, rock, electronica and psychedelia into their songs. When we join them in 2009 with the release of their eighth album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, and from there 1001 Songs have gone with what was the second single from the record – Summertime Clothes.

Summertime Clothes is all about love, lust and heat in the sweltering summer months. The song initially captures the intensity of the warmth in summer and how hard it is to sleep or do much of anything when you are so hot and just want to cool down. The track then changes with the narrator singing of a girl they are spending time with under the sun. It sounds like romance is in the air but the narrator is just interested in getting this girl into bed, he seems perfectly content just being with her and seeing the sights of summer and walking around, savouring her company.

Animal Collective are another group I was not familiar with prior to this challenge but I found this track rather interesting. The chorus is catchy rather than repetitive and the music is rich and varied. 2009 was the group’s most successful year and their sound has proved influential in the decade that has followed. The band themselves continue to perform to this day and have ten albums behind them.
